TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. - A 58-year-old woman from Lewiston died in a motorcycle vs. big rig crash on Highway 299 on Thursday, according to the CHP.

The crash happened at about 3:15 p.m. west of Indian Creek Lodge, which is east of Douglas City.

A CHP officer who was on a traffic stop was notified by a person in the area of a head-on crash involving a big rig and a motorcycle.

Authorities say they later determined that the woman on the motorcycle was riding east on Highway 299 and crossed the double yellow lines in a right-hand turn.

She went directly into oncoming traffic and crashed into a logging truck, driven by 69-year-old Jean Marschner of Junction City, according to the CHP.

Marschner attempted to avoid the crash by applying the breaks and turning right but was unable to do so. Marschner was not injured in the crash.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the Douglas City Fire Department.

The CHP said it is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Office S. Compton at (530) 623-3832.

The identification of the woman will be released when the next of kin is notified.

Highway 299 was blocked after the crash. Caltrans said it reopened for one-way traffic control before the highway reopened in both directions.
