OROVILLE, Calif. - A couple was severely injured in a car crash fueled by an argument, said the Oroville Police Department.

At approximately 7:58 a.m., Oroville PD and CAL FIRE responded to an emergency in the area of 70 Nelson Avenue for a reported vehicle traffic collision.

Officers located a 2008 Ford Edge that sustained significant damage. Officers said two individuals were receiving medical attention from CAL FIRE on the side of the road upon arrival.

Both patients were transported to Enloe for further medical evaluation and treatment.

At the scene, officials identified the two patients as a 28-year-old female and a 29-year-old male, who both identified as being in a relationship. Oroville PD says both parties are Oroville residents.

The witnesses reported the engaged couple was amid a verbal argument outside their apartment complex on Nelson avenue, less than a block away from the scene of the accident, officials said.

Oroville PD says the driver of the car attempted to drive off, but the boyfriend opened the driver's side door to prevent the driver from leaving. The driver began to travel west onto Nelson Avenue with the boyfriend partially in the car.

The car then crashed into a palm tree, resulting in the boyfriend being flung from the vehicle, where officials say he sustained significant injuries. A bystander assisted the driver in getting to the side of the road.

Oroville Police Officers closed down the roadway for a couple of hours to collect and process evidence.

At this time, the Oroville Police Department is not releasing the names of the involved parties and is investigating the crash to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
