Many people spend Memorial Day on the water

OROVILLE, Calif. - One of the ways the Forebay Aquatic Center is working to beat the heat today is by putting up a shade structure so that even when people are outside they can still keep cool.

They were working on this one panel at a time in the morning, and the full structure will stay up all summer long.

Staff at the Forebay are working in rotations, so no one is stuck in the sun for too long and guests are finding cover under trees.

"Every half hour we will be taking someone from the shade and putting them down here in the sun,” said Ted Wheeler, Operations Director at Forebay Aquatic Center. “Then in another half hour we will switch sides again and the people in the sun will head up into the shade."

Rori Summers, who lives in Palermo, came out to enjoy the water with her grandkids today.

"We are drinking a lot of water and we are going to stay out of the sun. It is going to be hot,” said Summers. “Then go home and then not go outside again."

People are burning through cans of sunscreen and of course, cooling off in the water.

It is important to remember your body may be shocked by how cool it feels.

It might be a hot one, but people tell Action News Now that they are feeling blessed for those that made the sacrifices for them to be able to enjoy their freedoms today.
