REDDING, Calif. - As the new school year approaches so does the need for school supplies that are needed because of the pandemic.

People who want to help out and donate school supplies can drop them off at the Department of Child Support Services in Redding.

People need the basics, like backpacks, pens, pencils, paper, notebooks and binders.

“Each family that drives through with their children, each child will receive a backpack with school supplies for free,” said Lana Johnson, Department of Child Support Services Outreach Coordinator. “There is no registration, there is no fee for that so hopefully to fill those backpacks with school supplies, we are accepting donations from the public.”

The department said families can typically spend between $100 to $200 per child on school supplies.

People don't have to donate just school supplies, they'll take cash or gift cards.

The last day to donate is on July 30.

The drive-thru school supply giveaway will take place next month as kids from transitional kindergarten to high school are eligible for the giveaway.

Last year the department gave school supplies to more than 160 kids.
