CORNING, Calif. - Corning Police arrested a man on Wednesday afternoon after he reportedly threw a molotov cocktail at an police officer.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., officers with the Corning Police Department began investigating a loud banging noise that was coming from outside of the police department on the 700 block of Fourth Street. Police say the suspect, 32-year-old Cassidy Russ of Corning, was observed by an officer walking away from the police department and onto Solano Street.

According to authorities, Russ was fumbling with an item near the front of his waistband while he walked away from officers, ignoring them. Another officer in a patrol vehicle stopped on the 700 block of Fourth Street and gave Russ verbal commands.

Officers say that Russ ignited what was later determined to be a molotov cocktail and threw it towards the officer. The molotov cocktail missed the officer and exploded near a parked vehicle.

Russ took off from the scene westbound on Solano Street with officers pursuing him both on foot and in a patrol vehicle.

Authorities say that an off duty officer tackled Russ on the 1300 block of Solano Street. Russ continued to resist arrest by concealing his hands by his waistband and back pack.

Russ continued to resist arrest during baton strikes and pain compliance techniques. Officers were able to take Russ into custody by placing him in handcuffs under sustained resistance.

A local business owner had to move a parked vehicle where the molotov cocktail had exploded, resulting in a fire. Authorities say that he additionally extinguished the fire.

Russ was transported and booked into the Tehama County Jail on attempted murder, possession of an explosive device, arson, battery on a peace officer, and resisting arrest.

Previous to this incident, Russ was a suspect in a separate incident that occurred on July 26 that involved him throwing a molotov cocktail at the Corning Police Department near a staging area for marked patrol vehicles. Russ had an active arrest warrant from that incident when he was arrested on Wednesday.
