16-year-old murder suspect to appear back in court Wednesday

CHICO, Calif. - The 16-year-old who was formally charged in connection to the deadly shooting at Teichert Pond appeared in court on Tuesday for arraignment, District Attorney Mike Ramsey said.

Ramsey said the 16-year-old will be back in court on Wednesday at 2 p.m. for further proceedings. The 16-year-old could be tried as an adult.

Officials are working to find a motive for the shooting. 

Witnesses said there was a group of four teens who walked past the encampment, Ramsey said. After walking past the encampment multiple shots were fired. 

The three other people are considered witnesses at this time.

Guy Steven Vanzant, 53, was determined to be dead at the scene on Sept. 4 at about 2:30 a.m.

A second man was shot and is still in the hospital recovering from the injuries he sustained but Ramsey is not sure what his status is.
