BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - The 14-year-old suspect was in court on Wednesday for his first hearing in juvenile court on a charge of attempted murder.

The teenager was arrested after an attack on a 71-year-old who was exercising at the Chico High School track last week.

District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the teen was arraigned and assigned a public defender.

The judge also orders the teen to undergo a mental health evaluation.

The 14-year-old will be back in court on June 15 for a plea.

Ramsey said the teen used a T-post to hit the woman. He then dragged her and strangled her before leaving her unconscious.

The teen was not a Chico High student.
