voters will see a one percent tax hike proposal on the march 2020 ballot. the tax... will specifically go toward public safety and helping fight crime. action news now reporter elizabeth zelidon joins us live from the board of supervisors chambers to break down this proposal. elizabeth? debbie, the board of supervisors unanimously voted on this criminal justice tax proposal earlier this week because for the first time since proposing a tax like this... the proposal is written so the money will specifically help for crime and cannot be used for anything else. let me explain.... when the board of supervisors has proposed a tax like this in the past it was always written in such a way where the money could be diverted to the general fund or be used to pay off unfunded liabilities. but now that it is a quote "specific tax " that can't happen. so the board of supervisors thinks this time around it may actually have a chance to pass... and supervisor baugh quotes what one speaker had to say at the meeting. its so cool she says this is what we have all been praying for it includes accountabiloty, transparency, and its a specific tax, this is what everyone has asked me for for years we are giving people what they want. this one has a chance. the money generated from that tax is estimated to be around 26 million dollars. that will go towards getting new officers, adding more jail beds, and adding aid to the district attorneys office to prosecute criminals. coming up at 5 oclock i spoke with community members around shasta county to see if they think this tax will actually help and are they willing to pay for it. in redding... elizabeth zelidon ... action news now. the one percent tax again will be on the march 2020 ballot. it needs a two thirds vote to pass. the story
