welcome back to action news now. it's a critical situation at the chico animal shelter. they say they're out of room. our christina vitale is live at the shelter with how you can help. yes the shelter is at full capacity with almost 100 dogs and cats ready to be taken home. nat sound animal services manager tracy mohr has worked at the chico animal shelter for 8 years. she told action news now it usually gets slow this time of year. sot: we kind of tend not to have a lot of adoptions for dogs during the summer because people are kind of busy they're away so they kinda dont want to take on the responsibility of a dog. mohr said even though they're full they try not to turn away any pets in need. sot: you know we do what we can to make room in terms of just finding a kennel space sometimes we'll have to see if we can find a foster home for a dog to make space things like that we never euthanize for space. some dogs have been at the shelter 6 months - or longer. sot: so we may spend a couple months working with those dogs because they need some behavior modification. standup: all together there's about 50 dogs available to adopt through the city of chico or the butte humane society....and there's at least 35 cats or kittens available with more on the way. and mohr said we're right in the middle of kitten season. sot: we have probably over 60 kittens in foster care right now and as they are getting old enough to be adopted they're coming back. some of them some of them are just waiting to be spayed or neutered before they can go home. mohr said people start adopting again at the end of august. sot: when people are back from vacations back on their work schedule kind of a routine thats when we see adoptions pick up so yeah but if youre thinking of adopting a dog definitely come visit and see who's available. to help promote adoptions the "clear the shelter event" will happen here on august 17th. live in chico christina vitale action news now. as that event approaches we'll keep you informed about more details.
