paradise high school. the chico animal shelter is in need of ice blocks to help cool down their dogs in the heat. manager, tracy mohr said the shelter puts the ice blocks in the kennels with the dogs. there are more than 70 runs at the shelter. mohr said with the high temperatures... sometimes the dogs go through two blocks a day. ice blocks can be found at most grocery stores and gas stations. tracy mohr animal services manager for chico they're all set up with swamp coolers and we hhave some large fans to help the air flow and move the air around but in chico in the summer time it gets really hot and so we do have kitty pools for some of the dogs that actually like playing in the water and that helps cool them down but if they're in the runs its nice to have the ice in there with them if you'd like to help out, mohr encourages people to visit their facebook page donate online... or drop off supplies in person at 2579 fair street in chico. the folks at turtle bay exploration park in redding do a lot to keep the animals cool during the summer. apart from giving them lots of shade... they also use misters during the hot afternoon. and give them ice to cool off. and for the predators, caretakers give the animals their version of an ice pop.... frozen meat called a "bloodsicle". if it gets too hot they bring the animals inside in the air conditioning.
