days.## hundreds of north state athletes raced for greatness today in red bluff.*action news no* reporter 'luna nas' has the story from the special olympics. nat.. on your marks, get set go. luna: seeing plenty of smiling faces and watching kids burst with excitement as they cross the finish line & reminds senior carisa hitchell why she became a special olympics volunteer. carissa: well ive been doing it all 4 years that ive went to red bluff and its always just really fun to see them get to do something they never get to do & nat: carissa: theyre always really excited like screaming with happiness and then you can tell when you give them a high five or give them the ribbon theyre always really happy. luna: every year students from tehama county high schools pair with hundreds of athletes for a special olympics competition jody: this is our 23rd year of having it school based where the schools practice on their school sites, it's a track meet for special education kids and general ed kids from age 3 to adultsãand its grown from like 32 athletes to we have over 435 this year luna standup: athletes from all ages competed in modifeid versions of track and field events like using a softball for a shot put throw. jody: we have races 25, 50, 100 meter relays, we have wheelchair races, we have races for blind students where they run on ropesãjust whatever we can do to make them successful. luna: parents who have kids with disabilities say events like the special olympics make a world of a difference. they haven't really been able to do sporting events before in the past so what is it mean for you as a mom to come out here do these types of eventsãfor me its really cool to be here to see them out here participating mom: its really nice to see them out here participating with kids and theres a lot of things you see at the park like you see kids climbing on the slides and stuff like that and you know your kid will never be able to do that so it just feels really good to see them out here and you know be able to participate. luna: and for the kids& well its all about having a good time.. kid: im having pretty good fun and doing like fresbee throws and my favorite part was the long jump. nat: holy cow wooo!!! reporting in red bluff luna nas action news now. organizers say it was truly a community effort to put on the event. rotaries, the sheriff's department and the school district all helped make the event happen. ###
