lauren a growing number of americans are affected by mental health problems. and many are turning to alternative forms of treatment for help... action news now reporter stephanie lin is here with the story of an oroville therapy center with a unique, four-legged approach. stephanie? reporter live debbie, when most of us think of animal therapy, dogs, or cats usually come to mind. but it turns out that locals here have another four-legged friend they can turn to in times of need. ### pkg good horse...yes. little issac pendergraft walks his horse, buff, around the pasture. nats then his instructor takes him for a slow ride. nats looking at him now, you wouldn't believe it. it was heartwarming, watching him transform from enjoying it. that transformation, issac's family says, is largely thanks to equine assisted therapy. it's a unique form of treatment that to promote mental and physical health. seeing these children heal from all kinds of trauma, and learn to have a voice.to be still, ride a horse, the confidence that comes with pound animal, that's something they can take with them the rest of their lives. a survivor of domestic abuse, shannon paige started california years ago. she describes her first experience with a horse that healed her... he was the animal that helped me heal from the grief and loss of a 19 year children. several of the animals here are rescues. shannon trains them all to help those needing help. get them back in the saddle in a safe environment so they can experience the healing of a horse. they've healed me. and little issac agrees. it makes me feel happy and not so excited. 888reporter live888 equine assisted therapy goes all the way back to the 1990s. we're told that 90% of treatment involves groundwork. that means building a relationship with the horse by walking and brushing it to help the rider build focus and mindfulness. stephanie lin, action
