meaghan meaghan tonight, the chico city council will decide whether or not to fund several police officers to patrol high school campuses. julia julia if the plan is approved, it would be the first time in six years a steady police presence would be on chico unified school campuses. boxes meaghan meaghan action news now reporter hayley watts joins us from chico high school with a look at what prompted the idea, hayley? reporter live good morning ... take a look ... this campus is widely open .. ... and that's the case for a lot of schools within the c-u-s-d, but, pending the council's decision tonight, security may be getting a lot tighter -- you'll probably be seeing a school resource officer here at chico high when school starts up next week. vo for a grant through the california department of justice tobacco law enforcement grant ... so while we often think of tragic school schootings and preventing them when we hear about armed police on campus ... this is actually driven by a push to educate kids about tobacco use and keep it off of campuses. tonight, chico's police chief mike o'brien is advocating for the move -- these resource officers would be under his department. sot full "the last main hurdle will be council - i think they'll be supportive, we're talking over 1.5 million dollars - to support this porgrma. we know the importnace of that, i think council knows the importance of that, and i think it will be a of those officers that will be beneficial for our schools and school safety. ### vo the school board has already approved reciept of the grant as of july ... and the chief says he already has peopel lined up to start in these positions, one of his sargeants and two officers and already ready to go, and then they'll back fill those positions . they can apply for a grant extension in 2020 ... meaning the new positions will be secured for several more years. reporter live also on the agenda tonight ... a plan to build a new enloe facility on east avenue ... and business owners will tonight ask council to reconsider a drive-thru subway on nord avenue. more on that, coming u-p. live in chico, hayley watts, action news now.### --5 sec open-- (first wx desk & chr wall) rising
