the fate of hundreds of road repair projects in california are up in the air right now as voters must soon decide whether or not to repeal the controversial gas tax. julia julia the repeal is on the november ballot, and while a lot of people object to the even more costly expense of just getting around, the impact will be significant either way it goes. boxes meaghan meaghan action news now reporter hayley watts joins us now from an area of chico that's set to get a major upgrade -- only if the tax stays in place. reporter live good morning ... take a look out here on the esplanade. all of this crumbling pavement will be replaced, you'll see new asphalt, bike lanes and sidewalks from here on east avenue down to the lindo bridge. it's a two million dollar project, with 3/4 of that coming in from the gas tax funding - the rest from the trash hauler franchise money. vo the work is set to begin next spring, but with many california drivers unhappy with the extra financial burden at the pump, it may be postponed. but, some lawmakers say a repeal might be just the thing needed to get the funding to come instead from the state budget. sot full years ago, saying 'here's how we would fund roads' ... when this gas tax is repealed, they're going to have to tell the voters, are they willing to make roads a willing to make roads a prioirity, you'll do it in the budget and make sure the money is there to help support these much needed projects that need to get done throughout the state," said gallagher. ### vo it's our choice as voters to get to decide whether we want to put in more of our own money to get these types of projects done. this is one tax inititative, however, that we can already see the results of. so what happens if we get rid of it? caltrans and says they'd try to finish active projects, but anything that hasn't started as of november will be downsized or cancelled indefinitely. the repeal, however, doesn't kill the projects - it just states that voters need to be the ones to initiate a gas tax increase - reporter live so it may be a major hold up ... or, just a small detour that gets the roads fixed in a way that more people are on board with. live in chico, hayley watts, action news now.### meaghan
