Carson Medley has a story to tell. The Thesis Editor and Advisor for the Office of Graduate Studies at Chico State is in the process of wrapping the book up. And as Ross Field reports, it's subject is near and dear to local basketball fans.
Carson Medley remembers the moment he took vested interest in Chico State men's basketball. It was January of 2015.
"I came to a game with my father-in-law and what I saw in a matter of ten seconds, I kind of became a fan," Medley said. "The next game I was waiting in the concession stand and I heard a Dominguez Hills fan say 'what's that special sauce they're drinking in Chico?' I wanted to find out what that special sauce is!"
Medley, who loves stories, decided the best way to discover what the sauce was all about was to put pen to paper.
His book it titled, "Through the Red Door," which happens to be the players' entrance to Acker Gym.
"I wanted to write a book that would really get to the day-to-day grind of what it takes to have a championship caliber basketball team, yet how these young men are getting up and playing in front of 180 people. I wanted to find out what drives them," said Medley.
Chico State head coach Greg Clink allowed Medley to have unlimited access to the team.
"At first, I was little leery about having a writer hang around the locker room during pregame speeches, being at practice, traveling with us at times, but the minute he showed me an example of his writing and what he does, I was sold. I mean he's an amazing talent," said Clink.
Medley spent three years with the team, a time in which the Wildcats captured conference titles and advanced deep into the NCAA tournament.
He's thrilled to reveal his story, and his story subjects are excited to read it.
"I'm in a book, I mean it's wild right?" Cory Silverstrom said.
"It's something we can have forever," added Jalen McFerren.
Medley plans to release "Through the Red Door" on January 20th.
