Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week: Nayeli Lara

Nayeli is a record-setting goal scorer and a top grade earner making her our Subway Scholar-Athlete of the Week.

CHICO, Calif. -- Corning High School's own Nayeli Lara plays soccer for the Cardinals varsity girls squad.

The senior can score at-will and proved that through her time as a Cardinal. Head Coach Claudia Martinez can also attest to that.

"She's been our top goal scorer for I think all four years. She's goal hungry that's for sure she's definitely a bulldozer on the field." said Martinez.

Lara is the all-time leading goal scorer at Corning, but she earned that title during her junior year. Lara says, "I work hard off the field, but you know I wouldn't be where I'm at without the coaches and teams I've played with throughout the years."

Soccer is a year-round thing in the Lara household. Nayeli keeps a pretty full schedule getting up at four in the morning to train, go to school, and soccer practice. Lara's day ends once her dinner, shower, and homework is complete close to midnight.

Yet, Nayeli isn't just a top scorer. She's also a top-grade earner posting a 3.8 grade point average. Martinez says, "she's always pushed herself... I definitely see her becoming a leader and I think that wherever she goes, she's going to have success."

Production on the field and in the classroom has led to Nayeli's next chapter. She'll be heading to Fresno Pacific University on a soccer scholarship.

Lara has a good eye for goal, and academic success. That's why she's our Subway Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
