OROVILLE, Calif. - Oroville football played its COVID-shortened spring season with a new head coach, Brandon Giles.

"I didn't see any of my players for a couple of months after I got the job," Coach Giles said.

Coach Giles started the day before the COVID-19 shutdown. This season, he's focused on building a strong team culture.

"We come from Oroville. This culture we have around our town is that we're hardworking kids," Coach Giles said." That's what we're trying to bring back. When people show up to our games, we're gonna play for four straight quarters."

"We all come together as a family," Linebacker Gabe Zarate said. "That's what football is to me. Without family, we can't do anything."

The Tigers went 1-4 in the spring season. This year, they're ready to prove themselves.

"Coach is trying to get us in a better mindset," Defensive Tackle Emiliano Villagrana said. "We have the mindset that we're here to play football and hopefully at the end of the day win."

Oroville only has 24 players on its roster, but Coach Giles is confident in his team's talent especially quarterback. Bobby Jackson is one of the guys competing for the spot.

"He's always here, always hustling," Villagrana said. "Always trying to get the team to work hard and work together."

He's going up against Aaron Johnson.

"He's a great athlete," Coach Giles said. "He's played every year he's been here. He's been a running back for us."

Coach Giles says he'll use Friday's scrimmage to help determine who starts at QB.

Oroville's first regulars season game is Sept. 3 against Marysville.
