CHICO, Calif. - Chico High School football prides itself on a tough defense.

"That's the most important thing: to be hard-nosed, tackle well and run to the football," Head Coach Jason Alvistur said.

The Panthers are preparing for the first 10-game season since 2019. Chico went 3-2 in the Covid-19 shortened season. Both losses were to Pleasant Valley.

Linebacker Tad Hervey is especially ready for the Almond Bowl.

"That's gonna be a great night," he said. "I'm so excited for that. I can't wait to play them again, get our payback."

Hervey said his defense is solid, with playmakers at every position.

"Our strengths are definitely our linebackers," he said. "We have some solid linebackers. Our D-line is gonna destroy the run play. Our coverage is gonna be great. I don't see any weak points."

The Panthers lost a lot of players to graduation, so developing the two's and three's is a priority. Even with the lack of depth, Chico's core group of seniors leads the way.

"Gage James, our quarterback, Tad Hurvey, our tight end/linebacker and Seth Cook our middle linebacker," Coach Alvistur said. "These guys are gonna be really good senior leaders. They're really dedicated."

Gage James takes the reins at quarterback after being the backup last season.

"Aaron Rodgers is my favorite quarterback, so I like to look at him and what he does," he said. "But, I'd rather just go out there and do me, do what I can to help my team win."

James also has experience as an outside linebacker. Alvistur called him one of the strongest players on the team.

"I like to think of us as a scrappy team," James said. "We're not always seen as the best team. I want to prove everyone wrong and just play hard every down."
