CHICO, Calif. --

Whether it's a soccer ball or football, Chico High's Gannon Agnew always hits hit target.

Agnew has had a passion for sports since he was five-years-old, but was forced to put it on hold during his sophomore year.

"Right as I planted, I remember my vision going black for a second and then I hit the ground," said Agnew. "I was disoriented. I didn't really know what happened. I just felt a pop and a sharp pain in my upper leg."

That pop was a pelvic avulsion fracture near his hamstring. That's when the muscle and tendon pulls a piece of bone away from the hip.

Doctors told Gannon he may not play football or soccer in high school again.

"I was feeling pretty down because I had known how severe it was, but not to that degree," said Agnew. "There was a chance that I would go without doing what I love the most and that's sports."

Complications after his first surgery forced Gannon to go back on the operating table. Gannon was in a brace and immobile for a total of six months combined.

But, he never doubted he'd suit up for Chico High again.

"It feels good coming back here and kicking. I was really rusty, having a whole new leg pretty much, so I had to get used to that," said Agnew.

"I admire that comeback spirit that he has and he's a tough competitor. He really likes kicking. He wants to be the man. He wants to come through in the clutch for his team," said Chico High's football coach Jason Alvistur. "Our PATs are money every time. We have the threat of making a field goal every time, like you saw on Friday night."

Against Yuba City, Agnew kicked the game winning field goal to win the game 30-28.

"When I knew that it could come down to that I got pretty nervous. But, I really like challenges so I was ready to embrace it and I had to capitalize on the moment, so it can propel me forward or set me back, so I was really motivated to hit it through and I did," said Agnew.

Gannon says he plans to also play soccer this season

The Panthers will hit the road this Friday against Sutter.

Air quality has worsened for most of northern California as a lot of smoke from our area fires as settled over the valleys and foothills. We can expect more hazy, smoky sunshine on Tuesday with light to moderate breezes as autumn begins.
