CHICO, Calif. -- Chico is now the home to a professional basketball team and they’re looking to fill their roster.
The Chico Superkats are a part of the American Basketball Association, a professional men’s basketball league. They had stints in Yuba City, Modesto and Sacramento.
“I’m really excited,” said CEO Spencer Norman. “I think we’re going to build a great team here in Chico and we’re here to stay. No more moving.”
The Superkats are also looking to fill their roster ahead of the season.
“We’re going to do a lot of drills,” said Norman. “We’re going to see your coordination. We’re going to work on your right hand, your left hand. We’re going to do a lot of shooting drills and we’re going to see your basketball IQ. Your IQ is very important to me. We give you a play, you have to do it.”
Norman says this is a paid gig and once offered the position you cannot play college ball. He also adds this will hopefully bring players a step closer to the NBA.
“I’m going to take their game to the next step and hopefully [they will] get looked at by any of the NBA teams or European teams. This is the best opportunity especially in this area,” said Norman.
The Chico Superkats will be coached by former ABA player Dennis Berryman. The season will run from November into April.
Tryouts will be held on the 17th of August from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Marsh Junior High School. Tryouts are for athletes 18 and older. The registration fee at the door is $50. Athletes are asked to arrive at 11 a.m.
