PALERMO, Calif. - An Sunday night crash in Palermo injured a California Highway Patrol officer and two others.

It happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday on Palermo Road and Lone Tree Roads.

The CHP officer, Officer Vue, was attempting to catch up to a possible DUI driver while heading westbound on Palermo Road.

A driver of a Kia Rio, 21-year-old Benjamin Calderiam, was driving southbound on Lone Tree Road while approaching Palermo Road.

The Kia entered the intersection at Palermo Road and Lone Tree Roads directly in front of the CHP vehicle where the two vehicles collided.

The CHP vehicle then began traveling south off the road where it overturned multiple times down an embankment.

The Kia spun and came to rest on the north shoulder of Palermo Road.

Officer Vue was able to get out of the vehicle and attempted to help Calderiam and the passenger in the vehicle, Daniel Drummond.

One person in the Kia was taken to Enloe Medical Center by helicopter and the other was taken by ambulance for major injuries.

Officer Vue was taken to Oroville Hospital where he was treated and released for moderate injuries.

Authorities said alcohol is not believed to be a factor and the crash is still under investigation.
