BURNEY, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is looking for the driver responsible for hitting an elderly woman and then leaving her to die Thursday on Highway 299 in Burney.

A CHP dispatch employee told Action News Now over the phone that a call came in just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday about a crash involving a pedestrian.

Officers then arrived at Highway 299 and Hudson Street where they found a female pedestrian who had been hit.

CHP said the woman was walking at the intersection and for unknown reasons, a vehicle collided with her.

Officers got information that a black Jeep may have been the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.

Once authorities got a tip, they attempted to locate the vehicle, but nothing turned up.

The CHP believes the black Jeep was going westbound on Highway 299 at the time of the incident.

If you know any information about the incident you are encouraged to call CHP Redding at (530) 225-0500.
