Will State of Jeffeson Get Behind Cal 3? Possibly.

The State of Jefferson says it might get behind the Cal 3 plan to split the Golden State into 3. That is, if they can make one thing happen.

CALIFORNIA-- People in the North State refer to themselves as "Northern Californians."

That title could become official if backers of "Cal 3" get their way.  Billionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper has successfully pushed his plan to get the Cal 3 initiative on the November ballot.    It would split the Golden State into three states; California, Northern California, and Southern California.

The north would include San Francisco, Sacramento, and all counties to the north.  The south would include inland counties from just north of Fresno, down to the border with Mexico, and San Diego.  California would include coastal towns, from Monterey down to Los Angeles.  Even if passed by voters, the initiative would have many hurdles to clear.

Dividing California for more equal representation has long been a goal of the State of Jefferson, a group that has pushed to split 23 counties in Northern California from the more-liberal Central and South.

But are Jefferson enthusiasts on-board with this new Cal 3 plan?  Not exactly.

According to Mark Baird, Jefferson State spokesperson, the plan has possiblities.  There's just one problem: Northern California would include San Francisco and Sacramento.  Says Baird, "We will not allow ourselves to be subjugated by Sacramento or San Francisco counties.  We will fight to change that boundary to reflect the needs of the people affected by the state split, which are the (23) Jefferson counties."

Baird says the big question is whether legislators can be compelled to alter the wording of an initiative, once it has been passed by voters.  Baird says the current case law is muddy.

Jefferson State representatives plan to hold a press conference at Robert T. Matsui U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building in Sacramento Thursday at 3:00pm.
