Chico Police investigating Motel 6 homicide

Police in Chico are investigating this morning after a deadly shooting at a Motel 6. Police say they found the victim in one of the rooms, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound. Police say the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital and are investigating the shooting as a homicide. Action News Now is working to learn new information as it becomes available.

Chico Unified School District among 3 CA districts suing 'Juul'

The Chico School District is one of three California school districts suing an e-cigarette maker, Juul. The lawsuits claim that there are too many students missing school due to Juul's e-cigarette’s and want Juul to compensate them financially. The CDC says more than 2,600 people have gotten sick and 60 have died due to vaping.

Chico City Council passes emergency ordinance, Old Humboldt Road

The Chico City Council passed an emergency ordinance that would temporarily close off parts of old Humboldt road. The road is well known for its historic rock walls, and ruts from covered wagons that made their way west during the gold rush. A group called "Respect The Walls" is working to clean up and preserve the area, and wants to keep cars off that stretch of road, eventually creating a heritage park. The second reading of the new ordinance is Feb. 4.

Ex-pharmaceutical executive gets 5½ years in prison

A pharmaceutical executive convicted of orchestrating a bribery and kickback scheme in the nation's opioid crisis will spend the next five and half years in prison. 76-year-old John Kapoor is the founder of Insys Therapeutics. Prosecutors said the company aggressively marketed a powerful opioid painkiller to doctors. It was the first successful prosecution holding drug company executives
accountable for the opioid crisis.

Death penalty sought in slaying of Sacramento officer

Prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty for the man accused of gunning down a Sacramento police rookie as she responded to a call. Police say Adel Sambrano Ramos killed Officer Tara O'Sullivan as she answered a domestic violence call at Ramos' home. O'Sullivan was with the department only a short time. She was the first Sacramento officer killed on duty in 20 years. Ramos faces charges of murder, and attempted murder of seven other officers.

Firefighters who died in Australia were on California tanker

We now know the identities of the firefighters killed when their C-130 cargo plane went down in Australia Wednesday. Firefighters Rick Demorgan, Paul Clyde Hudson, and Ian McBeth died in New South Wales. The plane was based in California. But the crew came from all over the country. Fire departments across our region have extended condolences to the family and friends of the victims.

Chicago woman becomes 2nd US case of new virus from China

A Chicago woman has become the second U.S. patient diagnosed with the new pneumonia-like virus from China. Health officials say the 60-year-old woman returned from a trip to China on Jan. 13 without showing any signs of illness, but a few days later she called her doctor to report feeling sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the woman is doing well, but is hospitalized to prevent the spread of the virus.

Impeachment trial: House managers resume arguments against Pres. Trump

Democrats finish their opening arguments today, in the impeachment trial of President Trump. Democrats must convince at least 20 Republican senators to vote in favor of impeachment. The focus for Friday’s arguments will be the second article of impeachment, obstruction of congress.
