Vitalant holds annual North State blood drive

With summer increasing the need for blood donations, Vitalant is holding it's annual North State blood drive. The event runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and again tomorrow, Aug. 3, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Chico and Redding. In Yuba City, donation times run Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Tucker Fire burns 14,000 acres with 74% containment

Firefighters are making progress containing the Tucker Fire in Modoc County. The fire has not grown in more than a day, but containment has grown to 74%. Highway 139 is open, but crews remain in the area. Officials ask motorists to be aware as there may be fire equipment in the road.

Man pleads guilty to starting Klamathon Fire

The man who investigators say sparked last summer's deadly Klamathon Fire has pleaded guilty. The Siskiyou County District Attorney says John Skoda set a campfire near the community of Hornbrook. That fire got out of control due to wind. The fire killed one person in Hornbrook, destroyed 35 homes and burned 38,000 acres. He could be sentenced to a maximum of six years in prison.

Senators to introduce legislation speeding up preventative forest fire projects

A bipartisan effort is underway in Washington to prevent wildfires. California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein and Montana Republican Senator Steve Daines say they plan to introduce legislation which aims to speed up logging and other preventive forest fire projects. The senators plan to introduce it after the Senate's August recess.

2 Bay Area teens still detained in Rome on murder charges

Two Bay Area teenagers remain behind bars in Rome, accused of murder. Italian police say Finnegan Lee Elder confessed to the murder of officer Mario Rega. Lawyers say there are new questions about the accusations because they have not been able to gain access to the officer's autopsy report.

Kennedy's announce death of 22-year-old grandaughter

There was another tragedy for the Kennedy family on Thursday. The 22-year-old granddaughter of the Attorney General and New York Senator Robert f. Kennedy, died. She died Thursday afternoon at the family's compound in Hyannis Port, MA.

President Trump increases tariff on China

The president announced he is increasing tariffs on China. This tacks on another 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of products of Chinese-made goods. The move is on top of the 25% tariffs already imposed by the president. Economists warn that the trade war could slow the US economy.
