Good morning, North State. Here's what you need to know to start your day on Aug. 12.

Some North State students head back to school

Students are set to head back to several schools today across the North State. In Shasta County, Shasta elementary schools are starting the year with a hybrid model. Shasta High students return to campus today with split days as well. Only half the students will be on campus at a time. Anderson High School returns to five days a week in-person classes, but is prepared to move distance learning, should there be an outbreak. All four Cascade Union Elementary Schools in Anderson will have students return to campus today. Remote learning and home-school options are also offered. In Butte County, some schools are starting virtually this week. The Oroville Elementary School District and Palermo Union Schools start today, and Paradise Unified Schools start Thursday.

PG&E to host wildfire safety webinar

PG&E is set to host a webinar today on wildfire prevention and its own efforts to reduce the number of public safety shutoffs. The webinar will be available online from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to take part, Click Here. The brief presentation will allow for some participants to ask questions.

Butte County public transportation receives funding boost

The Butte County Association of Governments will receive $1.7 million that will go towards purchasing electric buses, charging equipment and infrastructure for Butte Regional Transit. The money is part of $464 million in grant awards from the Department of Transportation.

US government strikes $1.525 billion deal with Moderna for 100 million doses of its Covid-19 vaccine

President Trump says the U.S. is on track to rapidly-produce 100 million vaccine doses as soon as it is approved. It’s part of a billion-and-a- half-dollar deal with drug maker Modern Inc. That company is already manufacturing the vaccine ahead of its approval and as clinical trials are still underway.

Joe Biden names Sen. Kamala Harris as running mate

Joe Biden has selected Senator Kamala Harris of California as his running mate. If elected, the 55-year old Harris would be the nation's first female, black and Asian American Vice President. Biden’s decision ends weeks of intense speculation over who would complete the democratic ticket.

Another mostly sunny and hot day for northern California today, quite similar to yesterday. Our weather will begin to change tomorrow, however, as a disturbance brings more clouds, cooler air, and a few showers and thunderstorms.
