TRINITY COUNTY, Calif. – One man is dead after a collision Monday morning on Highway 299 east of Little Browns Creek Road.
CHP officers said around 8:10 a.m., Nicholas Utne of Redding, was driving a Ford pickup westbound on Highway 299 entering a right curve in the roadway. At the same time, Korson Coulter of Weaverville, was driving a Chevrolet pickup eastbound Highway 299 approaching a left curve in the roadway.
For reasons still being investigated by the CHP, Officers say Utne diverted his attention from the road, allowing the Ford pickup to drift from the westbound lane and into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of Coulter.
Officers said both vehicles collided head-on. The impact caused the Chevrolet pickup to leave the roadway, descending a dirt embankment. The Ford pickup continued in a southwest direction and came to a stop on its wheels blocking the eastbound lane of Highway 299.
Coulter sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. According to the CHP, Utne claimed to be uninjured. Officers said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
The California Highway Patrol would like to remind drivers that even a second of inattention while operating a motor vehicle can have deadly consequences.
