CALIFORNIA - One of the most talked about state-wide propositions affecting everyone who drives in California is Proposition 6.

Known as the "gas tax," voters turned down the proposition. What it means is that road projects like the well known-renovation and resurfacing of Cohasset Road here in Chico will continue as planned.

But it also means that drivers will still pay that extra 12 cents per gallon at the pump, and DMV registration fees that are as much as $175 more a year.

With 78 percent of precincts reporting last night, the proposition is losing.

As of now, 55 percent of voters are saying "no." They want to keep paying the tax to fund statewide road projects and repairs.

Governor Jerry Brown spoke about the gas tax initiative at an event in Sacramento last night.

"I would have to say this is one of the most significant votes in American tonight because where else have people voted to tax themselves to pay for what they need?" said Governor Jerry Brown. "We've got a lot of naysayers that say 'oh no don't vote for that tax, don't vote for this.' People know you get what you pay for."

Brown, if you remember, was the one who signed the gas tax into law last April.

It provides $5 billion a year to fix roads. In fact, the state's already approved more than 9,200 projects across the state thanks to this money.

While 6,500 are already underway, half of those projects were at risk of being delayed or canceled if Proposition 6 had passed.
