CHICO, CALIF. - Vitalant will host its third annual Winter Classic Blood Drive on Saturday in Chico, Redding, and Yuba City.
Every blood donation will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies which will determine if the donations will be able to help treat patients in the hospital battling COVID-19 today.
Blood from donors who do not have COVID-19 antibodies can still help, as it will be given to patients battling cancer, traumatic injuries, blood disorders, surgeries, and more.
Action News Now Noon News Anchor Linda Watkins-Bennett interviewed Robin Carter from Vitalant Monday. She said, "We historically hold this event in January because traditionally it's a hard time to collect blood, as well as our summer months. This year is no different, we're looking for donors to help us out in Redding, Chico, and Yuba City Saturday."
The Blood Drive is scheduled in Chico at 555 Rio Lindo Ave from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In Yuba City, the event will take place at Boyd Hall, 1895 Lassen Blvd from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For Redding donations, the event will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m at 2680 Larkspur Lane.
Carter said they're especially in need of type "O" blood, both positive and negative.
"It is an important event. A critical piece of our healthcare system. Blood Centers across the country are working diligently to make sure we avoid a secondary health crisis by a lack of blood for patients who need it."
Only healthy people can donate and masks are required. Your temperature will be checked upon entry and there will be social distancing in place.
You are asked to make an appointment to donate at vitalant.org/winter-classic or to call at 877-25-VITAL (877-25-4825).
While supplies last, donors will receive an in-hand Winter Classic t-shirt.
