Two dead after fatal head-on collision on I-5 north of Redding

Update: Sadiel has been arraigned on two counts of murder.

UPDATE: 5:43 p.m., Sept. 17 - Shasta County District Attorney said on September 17, Sadiel was arraigned on two counts of murder, one count of DUI causing injury and related counts for collision which killed Miller and Wright.

Martinez has a bail set at $2 million.


UPDATE: 12:50 p.m., Sept. 17 - The two names of a double fatal collision that happened on Sept. 13 have been released.

It was determined a car was being driven the wrong way on the freeway, resulting in a head-on collision with another driver, a Ford truck.

The two people of the Ford truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Both have been identified by the Shasta County Coroner's Office.

The driver, 29-year-old Austin Lee Miller of Weed, California, and passenger 30-year-old Ashley Marie Wright of Grants Pass, Oregon.

The traffic collision remains an active investigation by CHP.


UPDATE: 6:13 p.m., Sept. 13 - Ramon Martinez Sadiel has been identified as the wrong-way driver in the fatal collision. 

During the investigation of the crash, CHP officers said 36-year-old Sadiel, had recently moved from Miami to Shasta County and was engaged in illegal cultivation and distribution of marijuana.

With the information that Sadiel was also suspected to be in possession of firearms, CHP requested assistance from the Shasta Interagency Narcotic Task Force and the CHP's Investigative Services Unit.

Agents and investigators went to Sadiel's residence with a search warrant on Maverick Road in Shasta in the early afternoon on Sept. 13. Multiple firearms, high capacity magazines and copious amounts of ammunition were found as well as both inside and outside illegal marijuana cultivation sites.

Sadiel is being held in the Shasta County Jail on two counts of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI with a $2,000,000 bail.


REDDING, Calif. - Northbound Interstate 5 north of Redding was backed up early Friday morning after a fatal collision, CHP said.

On Friday, Sept. 13 at approximately 2:33 a.m. a Dodge truck was driving the wrong way on Interstate 5, south of McCardle Flat Road. The driver was headed southbound within the northbound lanes.

A Ford truck was driving northbound on Interstate 5, causing a head-on collision that occurred on Interstate 5 at McCardle Flat Road.

Due to the collision, both occupants of the Ford truck were killed.

The driver and passenger of the Dodge truck were injured and transported to Mercy Hospital.

The dodge truck driver was impaired and after medical treatment, was booked into Shasta County Jail. The collision is currently under investigation by Redding CHP.

The last two days saw quite a bit of rain in Northern California. Today we could see more but the showers look to be more isolated today than in previous days. Highs today are expected to reach the upper 50s to lower 60s.
