CHICO, Calif. - People are still rushing to the grocery store for their last minute Thanksgiving shopping.
S&S Organic Produce and Natural Foods in Chico was packed today with shoppers coming in to get their last minute turkeys.
The big draw to S&S has been the fresh, free-range and organic turkeys.
Some people are switching things up this year and grabbing prime rib and ham too. They are seeing pre-pandemic numbers coming in here to grab their meat.
"It's just crazy busy,” said Meat Department Manager at S&S Adam Thomas. “We ordered early, so we seem to have enough product this year and we are surely seeing some higher demand, so it's just been busy, busy."
Claudia Weber was at S&S picking up some food for the family.
"Everybody fights over the turkey legs, so now I order the turkey legs,” said Weber. “Just turkey legs!"
Places like Save Mart on East Avenue told Action News Now they are open till 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving. They have plenty of holiday dinners and expect many last minute shoppers.
Dessert is also in high demand this year. Upper Crust Bakery in downtown was the busiest it has ever been.
They have been working hard for 48 hours straight to meet all the Thanksgiving pie demands.
Last year, Upper Crust Bakery saw such a high demand that one of their ovens broke. This year the team here was prepared as the owner tells me they have two new ovens.
Pies are not the only goodies people are picking up from the popular bakery to celebrate the holiday.
"We have preordered and we have three quiches, one order of cinnamon rolls and two orders of dinner rolls,” said Ed Butler who was picking up baked goods at Upper Crust Bakery. “This is the first half of my load, taking it all to the car."
Upper Crust originally had 366 pre-ordered pies and today doubled as they made over 800 pies for Thanksgiving. From pecan to apple, pumpkin has still been the most popular flavor of pie here this year.
The good news for Upper Crust is even though they had a super busy holiday, they are finally fully staffed.
