UPDATE 10:46 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 - The Shasta County Coroner's office has identified a man who was killed on the southbound Interstate 5 near Hilltop Drive overpass on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Investigators identified 78-year-old Douglas Denton of Redding. The SUV who was driven by Denton was traveling on Hilltop Drive when it left the roadway and entered the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, according to investigators. The SUV was struck by another driver and Denten was pronounced deceased at the scene, investigators said.

UPDATE 12:40 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 - A two-vehicle collision on the southbound Interstate 5 near Hilltop Drive overpass, left one dead at the scene.

On Wednesday, around 9:38 a.m. Redding police officers responded to the collision in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 just south of the Hilltop Drive overpass.

The driver of a white Buick SUV was southbound on Hilltop Drive when, for unknown reasons, left the south side of the roadway and traveled down the west embankment of southbound I-5, according to witnesses, officers said.

The vehicle then entered the southbound right lane of I-5 and was hit by a silver GMC pickup, driven by 74-year-old Robert Daniel Jr. of Shasta Lake City, officers said.

The driver of the Buick SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Daniel Jr. was not injured, however, his vehicle was majorly damaged on the left side.

The name of the Buick driver is not being released at this time, officers said. If you witnessed the white Buick SUV leave the roadway near the Hilltop Drive/I-5 overpass please contact the Redding Police Department. 

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

REDDING, Calif. - Traffic is blocked on the southbound lane on I-5 due to a two-vehicle collision, according to Caltrans.

A small SUV went off the Hilltop Drive bridge over I-5 and was hit by a pickup truck that was traveling down the freeway, Redding Police Department said. Caltrans reported on the crash around 9:55 a.m. 

The SB #1 lane is blocked south of the Hilltop Overcross due to a 2 vehicle collision. Caltrans is on the scene.
