INGOT, Calif. - One person died when their vehicle drove off a 50-foot embankment on Highway 299 near Ingot, California Highway Patrol said.

A red 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 was driving westbound on Highway 299 east of Sugar Pine Camp Road at about 60 to 65 miles per hour.

CHP officers said a 25-year-old man was driving erratically before his truck left the roadway.

The truck rolled down the south edge of the embankment and came to a rest in Little Cow Creek.

Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

One-way traffic control is still in place on Highway 299 following the crash.

August began seasonably hot on this Sunday with fewer showers and thunderstorms than previous days, but a few did still pop over the higher terrain. Our rain chances are disappearing, but the heat and smoke will remain.
