CHICO, Calif. - Mikade Burns is a junior at Pleasant Valley High school and was awarded with September's Top Teen of the Month presented by Carl's Jr.

Mikade was surprised by his coworkers who voted for him as Top Teen of the Month.

Mikade is a junior at Pleasant Valley High School who started going to Alzheimer’s Walks when he was about ten years old.

He said he started volunteering for them when he was 15.

With his parents help, he joined the committee for the walks.

"I was so just taken back that he wanted to take on that and I am proud of him for doing that," said his mom, Heather Dean.

Now every day after school and on Saturday's, Mikade is working at a law firm.

His coworkers say he was an easy choice to vote for Top Teen.

“He is a pretty special 16-year-old, he is very mature for his age, and he has a great work ethic… No job is too big or too small for him, he just has a really good attitude and always wants to help and is eager to learn," said Jennifer Wright, the Sr. Legal Assistant.

"You know, it’s a challenge for everybody at that age, to see somebody taking it head-on, when there is a financial need to make his own money to participate in being able to pay for school, he is going out of his way to do that. Not only is he going out of his way to do that, but the need is not immediate and he is treating it as an immediate need," said Zach Plottel, the Chief Operating Officer.

His colleagues weren’t the only ones who said they were impressed by his work ethic.

“He has always been self-motivated and he even did at home study for a while and we never even had to do ‘did you get your homework done?’ or nothing, he was always at home and excelling," said his dad, Jeff Dean.

Mikade said the Teen of the Month Honor caught him off guard, but he’s thankful for the people around him.

“Total surprise, but I really appreciate it and I have great people around me," said Mikade.

Mikade added he will be getting dinner tonight with the gift card.

The Alzheimer’s Walk this year will be held on October 12th at 9am at Sycamore Field in Bidwell Park.
