CHICO, Calif. - Recycling bins across Chico are filled to the top, and Waste Management is unable to empty them regularly.
"I called Waste Management a couple of times, the first week we called we really got no answers other than well they will be back next week, and then they didn't show up next week so the bin has remained full, and now we have got piles of recycling building up,” Chico resident Scott Peterson said.
Waste Management said the pandemic is hitting them hard.
"We are fully staffed there but over the last two to three weeks we have had some issues with drivers having COVID so that has made it a little bit troublesome to pick up all the routes,” said a spokesman for Paul Rosynsky.
"We believe very much in the philosophy of recycling and the alternative is well they are picking up trash so if we just load our trash can with recycling it would go away but we are not down with that,” Peterson said.
Peterson said the most frustrating part is not knowing what to do with his recyclables.
"They have offered no solutions as to what to do with our recycling in the meantime,” Peterson said.
"You can put extra bags of recycling next to your cart and again if your cart is full we will pick up at no extra charge,” Rosynsky said.
Peterson said he hopes that Waste Management will show up next week to take his recyclables but says in the meantime will take all of this to the Neal Road Recycling and Waste Management.
Waste Management said it does hope to get to these areas to pick up the recycling by next week.
