Van hits man walking near East Lassen

The victim of a collision on E. Lassen Ave, Friday morning, was pronounced dead at Enloe Medical Center, Chico police said.

UPDATE 3:19 p.m. Sept. 27 - The victim of a collision on E. Lassen Ave, Friday morning, was pronounced dead at Enloe Medical Center, Chico police said. His identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

On Sept. 27, at 7:14 a.m., the Chico Police Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision on E. Lassen Avenue at the Highway 99 overpass, police said.

A witness was providing medical care to the pedestrian on the sidewalk of E. Lassen Avenue, police said. The pedestrian had major injuries as a result of this collision.

Chico Fire and Butte County EMS arrived on scene and continued life-saving efforts on the victim. He was transported to Enloe Medical Center.

The Chico Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene and conducted a thorough investigation. E. Lassen Avenue was closed between Joshua Tree Road and Monterey Street for approximately 3 ½ hours while MAIT conducted their investigation, police said.

UPDATE 12:30 p.m. Sept. 27 - Lassen Ave. is back open, the driver who was in a van owned by Coach Glass, police said.

"We're treating this as a similar to how we treat a criminal investigation, not because it is criminal in nature, but because there is a minimum of major injury to the victim," Sgt. Terrence Tupper said. "We have our Major Accident Investigation team coming out, our specialized collision investigators coming out, they break down all the evidence at the scene and determine the cause and determine the level of speed."

Police are still working to identify the man who was hit, he was not carrying any identification. He is at the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

CHICO, Calif. - Police said witnesses told them a van hit a man walking near East Lassen Ave. beneath Highway 99 overpass.

The person went to the hospital.  Police say he did not have an ID on him.

Joshua Tree Road and Monterey Street off E. Lassen Ave., bike path along Highway 99 are closed, police said. They are rerouting traffic in both directions on E. Lassen near Highway 99.
