CHICO, Calif. - A man was arrested Monday after police said he tried to shoplift and physically assault a customer in a liquor store.

Chico police said the incident happened Monday night at Anthony's Liquor in Chico. They received a 911 call from the clerk about a suspected shoplifter.

Police said Francisco Franco tried to take a liquor bottle from the store.

When the clerk and a customer asked Franco to return the bottle and leave, officers said he grabbed a bottle of alcohol, broke it, and began waving it around, threatening to assault the customer and kill him.

The clerk and other customers tackled Franco. When police arrived they took Franco into custody.

Officers said customers who jumped in to help suffered minor injuries.
