UPDATE: 3:22 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, 2020 - The man shot and killed by Chico Police officers is identified as Steven Vest, 30.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey released new details this afternoon.
The incident started at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at 20th Street Park in South Chico. Police responded to a man attempting to attack people with a knife.
Ramsey says, according to the investigation, Vest then went to the Petco on Martin Luther King Expressway and witnesses say he was jumping on cars. That's when Ramsey says Vest then chased a truck driver delivering a load at Petco and a Petco employee into the store.
When police arrived Vest, according to police, advanced on them outside the store with a knife. When Vest did not respond to a taser, Ramsey says two officers fired their weapons. Vest was shot several times.
Vest has a history of drug use and was on probation for previously assaulting police officers.
Anyone who had contact with Vest at the park or at the 20th Street intersection involved and has not talked to police is asked to contact Chico Police investigators or the Butte County District Attorney's Office.
UPDATE: 11:01 p.m., Oct. 14, 2020 - Chico Police Chief Matt Madden says the man was killed on the scene and the officers involved are now on administrative leave.
In a late-night press release, Chief Matt Madden says the calls first came in around 7:30 p.m. when locals at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park reported a man showing a knife and threatening parkgoers.
When officers arrived on scene, they began looking for the suspect described as a white man in his 30s. As officers searched the area, Madden says dispatch began to receive more calls that the suspect was now near the E. 20th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway intersection.
Citizens told dispatch the man had begun to damage their vehicles with the knife. Chief Madden says the suspect was then found at Petco, "actively causing a disturbance."
"At some point after the officer's arrival, gunshots were fired by two Chico Police Officers," Madden said in a press release.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene after Madden says life-saving efforts were attempted.
The officers involved in the shooting were not injured.
Chief Madden says he has invoked the Butte County Officer-Involved Shooting Protocol Team to take over the investigation.
The team is led by Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey and will lead an independent investigation into the facts of the case.
Chief Madden says his department is cooperating with the investigation and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
Editor's Note: This story originally stated the suspect was shot inside the Petco store, as was advised by officials minutes after the shooting. Since then we have learned the shooting happened outside the store and the story has been modified to express that change.
