TEHAMA COUNTY, Calif. - A suspect has been charged with attempted murder for an incident that took place at the Saint Elizabeth Community Hospital on Friday, according to the Tehama County District Attorney’s Office.

22-year-old Karl Vanhoomisen was arrested Friday after Red Bluff Police Department received a report of a man with a gun outside of the hospital.

Police said he then took off running and carjacked a vehicle, taking a person hostage.

Vanhoomisen forced the driver to head south on Highway 99 when police said he fired shots out of the vehicle.

Police said the driver was able to escape the vehicle and Vanhoomisen was arrested.

He appeared in court for arraignment Tuesday.

He has also been charged with kidnapping for carjacking, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and second-degree robbery.

He currently has no bail set and will appear back in court on Jan. 4.

The district attorney’s office said Vanhoomisen's attorney requested a doubt for competency to be declared and he is scheduled to be evaluated before the next court appearance.
