CHICO, Calif. - It has been nearly three months since the Boys and Club counselors last saw their kids because of the pandemic.

"We've been so excited to see every missing tooth and every hair cut they walk in the door with," said site director of the Chico clubhouse, Shawna Stinson. "We've been pretty ecstatic."

Stinson said the first day back was emotional. Kids were excited to see the staff, one another and to see their artwork still hanging on the walls.

Aliyah Dinits has been coming to the summer camps for a few years and said coming back has been a nice change of pace.

"It feels good because we've been home so much and being with friends is a really nice change," said Dinits.

This summer has brought new friends and new rules, as the state continues to reopen after the statewide stay-at-home order in March.

New handwashing stations have been set up, as well as the requirement of kids to wear masks throughout the day.

"We are only going to have nine kids to any group because we want to make sure we have small numbers," said Stinson. "We have the chairs seated six-feet apart, at times we will have them be able to work together, sit a little closer, play games, but that's where the mask comes in if we can not stay six-feet-apart."

Stinson said they have been giving out partial and full scholarships to families who need them. She also shared if you do not feel comfortable with putting your child in a camp yet, the club is offering virtual camp programs online.

The Chico clubhouse has five camps running and two teen centers open.

We'll get even warmer mid week. A modest drop in temperatures and the potential for showers will finally return for your weekend.
