Chico, Calif. -- The Centers for Disease Control And Prevention is calling suicide a national public health problem.

The suicide rate has increased in the north state in recent years. In Butte County alone, the suicide rate is three times the state average.

In general, rural areas tend to see more suicidal behaviors and drug and alcohol abuse.

A new study shows suicide rates have increased 30% in the United States in the last twenty years.

Scott Kennelly, the Assistant Director of Butte County Behavioral Health, spoke about some of the warning signs to look out for if you or your loved ones might be struggling with suicidal thoughts.

"People tend to start looking at things that involve death before they commit suicide. They start researching or googling death or talk about killing themselves. Sometimes people are very hopeless and despondent. A lot of people who attempt have signs of depression," said Kennelly.

A weak disturbance passed over northern California early this morning, but as expected, it only brought some gusty wind, a few clouds, slightly cooler weather, and no rain. Much bigger changes to our weather will occur this weekend.
