There's a big change of pace on the way for your Thursday forecast. Much cooler temperatures and gusty South winds are projected for Northern California today. You may want to take advantage of this cooler weather while it lasts, as the heat is returning for your weekend. Clouds are still blanketing Northern California this morning, and we are continuing to track light showers across some mountain areas of Lassen, Shasta, and Modoc Counties. Showers are expected to be very limited today, and will only impact higher elevations in far Northern parts of our area. Temperatures have dipped into the mid 50's in the valley overnight, and into the 30's to 40's in the mountains. Some areas are around 10 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago, so you may want to grab a light jacket on your way out the door this morning. Winds are out of the South up to 15mph early today, and are expected to get stronger as we head into the afternoon. Sustained winds could reach 25mph in the valley, with gusts up to 35mph later today. High temperatures are projected to be much cooler than what we've had for the last several days. Valley areas will top out in the mid to high 70's this afternoon, and mountain areas will end up in the 60's later today. Winds will shift to become out of the East tonight, and gusts to 35mph will be possible through midnight.

The warming trend returns for your Friday forecast. Sunny skies, and lighter North winds are projected for Northern California on Friday. Temperatures will range from the mid to high 80's in the valley, to the mid 70's to low 80's in the mountains. Winds will be out of the Northwest from 10 to 15mph. Temperatures will continue to climb as we head into the weekend. Valley areas are projected to end up in the mid to high 90's on Saturday afternoon, and there is potential for a few cities to briefly top out in the triple digits. Skies will stay sunny on Sunday, but most areas will see a drop of a couple of degrees compared to Saturday. Overall, it's going to be a dry and hot weekend across Northern California. Fire danger will be high through the weekend, so you're advised to use caution while burning outdoors, or operating any machinery near dry brush.

A decent cooling trend is on the way for the start of next week. Valley areas are projected to top out in the mid 80's on Monday and Tuesday. Skies will stay sunny on Monday, but some clouds will be returning for your Tuesday. The cooler weather will be the result of a wet and cooler system passing through to our North. The latest projections are keeping showers in Oregon and Washington, while California stays dry. Temperatures will climb back into the low to mid 90's towards the middle to latter part of next week.
