Updated 9:52 a.m. July 11, 2020 - Two people were arrested after a Friday night standoff in Chico.

Chico Police officers made the arrests following a citizen report concerning a handgun that was seen in the possession of occupants of a vehicle.

Officers found the vehicle and found out the three occupants had gone into an apartment on La Leita Court in Chico.

Two 17-year-old females were detained outside the residence. An adult male suspect was believed to be inside the apartment. The suspect was identified as 23-year-old Michael Gardenhire, a man who had a felony warrant outstanding.

Officers used a P.A. system in their vehicle to call Gardenhire out of the apartment. The man did not respond to the officers' instructions. Because a firearm was involved in the call it was believed Gardenhire was carrying a weapon, so the SWAT Team was activated.

After the SWAT team showed up Gardenhire voluntarily came out of the residence. He was arrested without incident, more than five hours after the initial call to police.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence. Officers located the firearm in question.

Gardenhire and one of the juvenile females were arrested for charges ranging from standing warrants to resisting arrest, and violation of probation. Additional charges related to the firearm are pending further investigation, said police. The second juvenile female was released to her parents.

The incident started at 4:30 in the afternoon on Friday, July 10, 202, and ended just before midnight. La Leita Court was closed for approximately six hours.

A trough of low pressure is moving over northern California this afternoon and tonight, and that will increase our wind speed and raise our area's fire danger even further. The wind will be weaker Thursday, but the smoke will get worse.
