REDDING, Calif. - Because of the vaccine mandate, some families are now looking at other forms of learning.

One of those options is homeschooling.

Warren Ackley and his wife were looking forward to sending their 4-year-old son to school in person. But now they’re rethinking that plan.

“Just with the mandates and everything, it shouldn't be up to the government to decide what I do with my son and my daughter,” said Ackley. “It's just frustrating. School isn't what it used to be anymore.”

Ackley works full-time and acknowledges there might be some challenges.

“Just overwhelming my wife,” explained Ackley. “She's so busy with the baby and having to school him it's going to be tough. But it's going to be something that I think we need to put our foot down and stick to.”

He believes homeschooling will be the right choice.

“It's going to be different for sure than what we're normally used to,” said Ackley. “But I think at the end of the day it will be beneficial and it will teach him to stand up for what he believes in.”

At Shasta Charter Academy, the school said it’s seeing more families ask about their homeschool options. The school does what’s called personalized learning. On top of homeschooling, it also offers on-site classes and even online learning.

“What parents should know is that it's a serious commitment to oversee your kids' schooling. It's not very time-consuming but it does require intentionality,” said Benjamin Claassen, the director for Shasta Charter Academy. “You really have to be involved in your student's learning on a day-to-day basis.”

Classen said some students might have different needs when it comes to their education.

“Each child is different,” said Claassen. “One student might need a high degree of involvement and accountability. Another student you might be able to point them in the right direction and get out of the way.”

Shasta Charter Academy encourages families looking into making that home school switch to do research first.
