HAPPY CAMP, Calif. — A rock and mudslide in Siskiyou County has closed down State Route 96. The slide is located about four miles west of Happy Camp.
The highway has been closed since early Thursday morning.
“It is currently assessed that more than 30,000 cubic yards of material need to be cleared from the area," said Caltrans in a news release. "Due to wet weather conditions and the active nature of the slide, the highway has been closed for the safety of the traveling public. State Route 96 was previously reduced to one lane with 24/7 traffic control in the area following another slide on January 19th.”
There is no estimated time for reopening Highway 96, with wet weather expected to continue for the next few days, according to Caltrans. There is no detour west of Happy Camp.
This area had a similar slide on Jan. 19, that closed the highway.
Highway 96 runs from Willow Creek at the Junction with 299 and joins Interstate 5 north of Yreka.
