Siskiyou County child drowns near Applegate River

A 7-year-old child from Siskiyou County drowned near the Applegate River, south of Jackson County, on Saturday.

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. - A 7-year-old child from Siskiyou County drowned near the Applegate River, south of Jackson County, on Saturday.

Around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday, the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office received reports of a possible drowning near the river. 

According to reports, first responders and deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office were first on scene and there was a heroic effort to revive the 7-year-old victim. However, the child was pronounced dead at a hospital in Medford, OR. 

Authorities are reminding people to be cautious of high water levels in local rivers, streams and lakes. 

A joint investigation between the Shasta County Sheriff's Office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office is underway. 

The counties have assigned water safety deputies to the main waterways to exercise more caution. 

"On behalf of the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office, I would like to offer our condolences, prayers, and thoughts to the victim, family members, and friends of the decedent," said Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey.
