CHICO, Calif. - Sierra Nevada Brewery Company has a new sustainability initiative they are working on. Action News Now spoke to a representative about how they are helping other breweries properly recycle industrial waste.
The new sustainability initiative is actually taking place in North Carolina near the Mills River Brewery, but representative Robin Gregory says they are hoping it will bring even more sustainability projects to the Sierra Nevada in Chico.
"What we would like to do going forward is think of how we can get outside of the brewery and make an impact in the community overall. We are thinking about that everywhere we work and operate as a company particularly here in Chico," said Gregory.
Gregory says the company shelled out money to help open up an Industrial Recycling Center for more than 80 breweries in North Carolina.
"Industrial recycling methods separates different materials and allows you to recycle materials you would not be able to recycle with typical recycling methods. That includes things like malt bags, or shrink wrap, or PET strapping we use to strap the cans to the pallets, that is a huge amount of material," said Gregory.
Gregory says Sierra Nevada has been Industrial Recycling for years, that 99.8% of their waste is diverted. She says other breweries in North Carolina saw what they were doing and asked if they could recycle their materials at the Mills River location.
"We were totally supportive of that, we were very quickly overwhelmed by the amount of material being brought up so we quickly saw a need," said Gregory.
Gregory says it is always a goal for Sierra Nevada to cut down their footprint and they are hoping that rubs off on other breweries and local businesses.
Gregory added they do separate and recycle their Industrial waste in Chico, but now they are looking for other ways to create even more sustainability.
The company says as far as they know North Carolina is one of the only Brewery Cooperatives in the county and the largest.
