Update: 5:33 p.m., September 13, 2019 - The Shasta County Sheriff's Office said the man has been positively identified as 58-year-old Teddy Woodrow Abbie of Redding.
Redding Police, who is the investigating agency, said Abbie became combative with the Correctional Deputies as they attempted to place him inside a safety cell.
Abbie had made suicidal statements to employees.
Interviews have been conducted with medical staff, inmates and Correctional Deputies.
The cause of death is pending.

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - A male inmate was found unresponsive at the Shasta County Jail on September 12.
The Sheriff's Office said around 8:21 a.m. the man was found unresponsive while in custody. The man was pronounced dead by authorized medical personnel following immediate life-saving efforts by custody and medical staff.
Critical Incident Protocol was initiated by the sheriff's office as well as a request of assistance from local law enforcement agencies to investigate the circumstances.
Redding Police have been designated as the investigating agency with investigators from the county's District Attorney's Office and Major Crimes Unit assisting.
Identity is pending release once next of kin has been notified.
