SHASTA LAKE, Calif. - Memorial Day Weekend kicked of with less than ideal weather for folks looking to hit the water at Shasta Lake.

“It never fails,” Shasta Marina owner John Harkrader said. “On Memorial Day weekend, you're guaranteed almost one day of crummy weather and it happens to be today when people are loading up this afternoon.”

But the rest of the weekend calls for sunny skies and warm weather and perfect conditions for a weekend out on the water.

“It's unfortunate that the Memorial Day weekend is starting off obviously with rain,” visitor John Brereton said. “But the weather is expected to clear up tomorrow and Sunday. So we should be getting some nice clear sunny skies.”

Still, Harkrader says Friday's weather conditions won't stop guests from having a good time.

“It doesn't seem to bother the customers,” Harkrader said. “All our boats have hot tubs and fireplaces and central heat and air.”

And that's exactly what Brereton plans to do.

“We have a hot tub up there on the top of the houseboat,” Brereton said. “So we'll definitely be enjoying that and the adult beverages will probably be enjoyed as well. And we got some different board games and things. So we're just looking to have a good time.”

Not many people had checked in at the marina early in the afternoon.

Harkrader said that's possibly because of the wet weather.

Despite that, he said it's shaping up to be a great holiday weekend.

“It's great out here on the lake,” Harkrader said. “And talking to the other marinas, they're just like me, pretty much booked up for the weekend.”

And no matter rain, snow or sun, he says there's no bad day on a houseboat.

“It doesn't matter if it's pouring or it's sunshine, they still have a great time,” Harkrader said.
