REDDING, Calif. - A man is dead after a violent encounter with the Redding Police Department at the Americana Modern Hotel. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Morgan Davis of Cottonwood.
RPD received a call just after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning about a possible domestic disturbance. When officers arrived on the scene, they found Davis outside of his second-floor room. Police managed to talk Davis off the balcony, but when Davis came down he feigned a charge at police. Police say Davis began biting chunks of flesh out of his arm and spat them on the ground.
Police say Davis did not comply with verbal commands and resisted the officer’s attempts to detain him. RPD reports the used a taser, fire bean bag rounds, sent in a police dog, and hit Davis with their batons before getting him under control.
Business owners around the area tell Action News Now they’re shocked this happened so close.
“I thought it would be much better but then you hear about this, this morning,” said Douglas St. Louis, who owns a business nearby. “I was kind of surprised to see something like that go on over there.”
Davis was taken to the hospital where later died due to medical difficulties. Police searched his room where they found various drugs and a knife.
Five police officers are on paid administrative leave, which is part of the standard critical incident protocol.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
